Cargo was written to coincide with the bicentennial of the abolition of the UK slave trade in 2007 and has extensively toured the UK and also been presented in the heartland of historical US Slavery - South Carolina, but, whilst the impetus of that UK bicentennial date has passed the issues of the contemporary slave trade are still very much with us so I'm happy to present Cargo wherever possible to raise awareness of these issues either as a stand alone event or extracts as part of a solo concert. Cargo uses narration, images, video & contemporary music to tell the story of the abolitionists campaign to end the UK slave trade 200 years ago outlining the work of Wilberforce, Clarkson, Equiano and others and also the role of the African slaves themselves in the fight for freedom. It also raises the issues of the many different forms of slavery that still exist affecting far more people than the trade of 200 years ago. Human Trafficking today sees more than a million people a year, bought and sold across borders not only in the third world but also in the USA, Europe and on our own doorstep here in the UK. Different kinds of slavery from 200 years ago but still the buying & selling of human beings through bonded labour, chld labour, forced labour of various kinds and Trafficking for the sex trade. Cargo seeks to highlight the links between contemporary slavery poverty, prejudice, ignorance and unfair trade. I'm available for events that use Cargo as a whole evening or as part of a solo concert.
